Sweep away loose debris
Leaves and loose dirt are easier to remove before they build up. Check corners and the space around pots. Use a brush suitable for your paving and avoid scraping delicate finishes.
Notice damp areas
Algae and moss favour damp conditions. Watch shaded patches, areas beneath planting and places where water stands. Clear loose leaves from accessible drainage points. Persistent pooling may need attention beyond cleaning.
Know your paving
Natural stone, concrete and porcelain have different care needs. Follow instructions from the paving or sealer manufacturer. Existing damage and the condition of joints also matter when choosing a method.
Start gently
Remove loose dirt first. Check any product is intended for your material and follow its instructions. Test a small inconspicuous area before treating the patio. A more forceful method is not automatically a better one.
Check joints and edges
Look for movement, gaps and crumbling material. Photographs help explain changes when asking for advice. Cleaning may make pre-existing wear easier to see; repairs are a separate conversation.
Ask when you are unsure
If growth keeps returning or you do not know the surface material, send wide photos and close-ups. We can discuss cleaning options and the limits of what a clean is likely to achieve.
